Compton Verney, Christmas

Selected dates throughout December

Bring the kids to meet Father Christmas* in his magical woodland grotto by following a wondrous trail lit with firefly fairy lights. There are surprises around every corner and plenty to delight the senses, from the sound of a crackling fire to the wonderful smell of freshly baked gingerbread. When you meet Santa, make sure to tell him what you’d REALLY like for Christmas but don’t forget to post a letter in our special post box, just to remind him! Before he whizzes off to prepare for his epic journey, delivering presents around the world, we’ve asked him to bring some early gifts for our little visitors to take home, ready to open on the Big Day.

10, 11 and 17, 18 December, at 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm

Relax in the glorious surroundings of the Adam Hall in the main house and enjoy suitably festive-themed menu of finger sandwiches, warm scones with preserves and clotted cream, festive savouries and pastries and delicious seasonal treats.

9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, 18 December, 6pm – 9pm

Swap the crush of the High Street for the delightful sights, smells and sounds of Christmas emanating from hand-selected stalls, including awar-d winning small batch rum and gin, handmade Belgian chocolates and bakery presents, succulents with cacti planted in unique and quirky planters and children’s personalised plates in solid oak. The gallery’s  Gift Shop will also be open, offering a wide range of home and fashion gifts, plus lots of lovely stocking fillers. When you’re completely shopped out, take a break and indulge yourself with a glass of mulled wine, or a piping hot cup of hot chocolate, while nibbling on warm mince pies and other tasty treats. Warm-up at one of the fire pits and enjoy an amazing, relaxed atmosphere complete with music and entertainment.

20 November, 11am – 1.30pm

Create a truly unique present by designing a ring, pendant or necklace in wax, which will then be sent to London’s famous Hatton Garden, for casting in silver. Your piece will be hand finished according to your specifications and sent back to you just two weeks later in a beautifully packaged gift box, with plenty of time to give that very special person in your life the most amazing gift.

30 November and 5 December, 10am – 12.30pm

These fun and inspiring workshops are totally hands-on! 10 December, 2pm – 4pm

Christmas carols are one of the festive season’s true essentials and hearing the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir, directed by Paul Spicer, perform in the splendours of Compton Verney’s ‘Capability’ Brown chapel promises to be heavenly.

12 and 19 December, 11am, 1pm and 3pm

Snuggle down with Mother Christmas to enjoy an hour of specially chosen, interactive Christmas stories.

11 & 18 December

A series of mini-concerts performed by the multi-award-winning all-female string quintet, Toscana Strings. They will be accompanied by ballerina Laura Tye, who has danced with The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet, to create an original, beautiful and not to be missed combination of live classical music, performance and storytelling, based on two classic family favourites, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman.

Enjoy Warwick Castle in a whole new light

WARWICKSHIRE may be in tier 3, but it’s good to know there are still ways to discover the true magic of the festive season and indulge in an evening of escapism.

The Light Trail at Warwick Castle invites guests to experience the historic estate in a whole new light as the vast surrounding grounds are transformed with a multi-sensory experience including light installations and projections accompanied by spoken word and musical recordings.

For six weeks from 5th December to 17th January, we’re invited to wrap up warm and follow a glowing path of lanterns in front of the iconic East Front. The new trail follows a romantic medieval theme, as guests are led through the grounds by a festive poem of hope. Multi-coloured lighting projections and installations bring the history of the castle to life after dark, with illuminations putting the spotlight firmly on Castle highlights, including the mighty trebuchet.

Following the winding pathways, you encounter interactive features including an immersive light tunnel, and woodland trail where glittering trees are draped in light. Parts of the trail also feature notable surprises to provide fun for guests of all ages including opportunities to interact with the displays themselves by changing the colours. Guests are also invited to capture memories of this special experience by taking photos at key ‘selfie spots’ featured along the trail.

The magical winter journey doesn’t stop there as guests can continue their experience with a session on the ice rink and a wander around the Winter Market, packed with seasonal gifts, food and drink.

The market is free to visit and open to all – not just Castle ticket-holders. Open daily between until 3rd January 2021 from 10am to 8pm, it’s the perfect opportunity to buy local this Christmas, including craft beer, artisan gin, handcrafted jewellery, homewares, gifts and plants. The outdoor Winter Market provides a safety-conscious solution to Christmas shopping, with contactless payments, one-way systems and additional hygiene measures in place.

Operations Director Liam Bartlett said: “We’re so excited to reopen with such a great collection of festive fun. All of these new attractions have been organised with guest safety as priority – they’re outside in the open air, with timed slots and strict capacity limits to ensure that everyone can socially distance as well as temperature checks on arrival and plenty of sanitising stations.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming back visitors from the local area in the first instance, and by keeping the Ice Rink, Light Trail and Winter Market open right through until 17th January. We hope that people from elsewhere will also be able to join us when their local restrictions allow.”

With so much safe and seasonal activity on offer at Warwick Castle, there really is light at the end of the tunnel this year!

Lion hunters invited to join charity’s festive challenge

Lion hunters invited to join charity’s festive challenge

YOUNG ‘lion hunters’ are being invited to prowl the town centre for hidden clues on a new treasure trail in Warwick this Christmas.

Throughout December keen-eyed shoppers are able to follow the clues to spot Molly Olly’s Wishes charity lion mascot Olly the Brave in 14 windows. Each one will be sporting festive outfits and displaying a letter.

Entries, which will spell out seasonal words, can then be posted through the letterbox at Molly Olly’s Wishes offices in Swan Street for the chance to win a super-sized version of Olly The Brave.

Participants are also invited to make a donation to the charity, which supports children with terminal and life-limiting illnesses and their families. It was established by Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw in 2011 following the death of their eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

The cuddly lions have their own Hickman line and a detachable mane, which helps to explain and normalise the effects of chemotherapy. These form part of an Olly The Brave pack that has now been handed out to more than 40 hospitals, along with a book from the charity’s exclusive Olly The Brave series.

Rachel said: “The treasure trail is free but if you would like to make a donation to the charity, we would be extremely grateful. As you can imagine this year has been extremely difficult for Molly Olly’s Wishes as their fundraising has significantly reduced but we are seeing a massive increase in wishes and children requiring Olly The Brave therapeutic lions and books to help explain their journey.

“Thank you for all the retailers for their support and for making us feel so welcome in our new offices. Anything people can give to help Molly Olly’s Wishes help children and their families through their darkest days would be extremely gratefully received.”

Spring into action and help trampoline park spread some Christmas cheer

TRAMPOLINE park visitors in Warwick are being invited to spring into action and help spread extra Christmas cheer by supporting a new charity toys appeal.

Jump In Trampoline Park is collecting gifts for Molly Olly’s Wishes who will in turn distribute them to children in hospitals across the area.

Between now and Christmas Eve the popular family attraction will accept new toys for children and young people aged up to 18 when handed in over the counter.

Plus there’s the chance to take part in the Name our Reindeer Competition. The winner, which will be announced on Boxing Day, will get to take home the ride-on toy.

Molly Olly’s Wishes was established in 2011 following the death of Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw’s eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

It works to support children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and help with their emotional wellbeing as well as grant wishes and donate therapeutic toys and books to both children directly and to hospitals throughout the UK.

The charity’s mascot is a therapeutic toy lion called Olly The Brave who has his own Hickman line and a detachable mane which helps to explain and normalise the effects of chemotherapy. These form part of an Olly The Brave pack that has now been handed out to more than 40 hospitals, along with a book from the charity’s exclusive Olly The Brave series.

Part of more than £2m raised to date, has also been used to fund the first Molly Olly consultant in paediatric medicine at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Rachel Ollerenshaw said: “We are extremely grateful to Jump In once again for their support. Donating toys is a great idea and will undoubtedly bring a smile to children and their families who are facing very challenging circumstances at what should be a fun, carefree time. These gestures whether big or small can help to make those dark days brighter. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Manager at Jump In Warwick Sam Dunn, said: “Christmas is a time for giving and here at Jump In we want to embrace that. As a family venue, we are delighted and proud to be partnering with this wonderful charity that works so tirelessly to help children and their families through such a difficult time.

“Please donate a small gift next time you visit us in the knowledge that it is bringing some joy to those most in need of it, especially at this time of year.”

There is plenty of fun to be had at Jump In’s new Christmas Parties, designed especially for groups of families and friends of all ages to enjoy.

Molly Olly’s Wishes also needs the support of companies and individuals to enable it to help more children. Please contact Rachel on 07747 854914. Further information or how to donate can be found at: www.mollyolly.co.uk
