Going that extra mile for Molly Olly’s

A BRIDGEND surgeon is hoping to be a tower of strength as he gears up for a 500-mile charity cycle ride between famous landmarks in Paris and Blackpool this weekend.

Dr Richard Johnson is among a group of five fundraisers cycling between the Eiffel Tower and Blackpool Tower from June 30th.

He’ll be joined by his brother Michael – who organised the trip to coincide with his 50th birthday – and friends Michael Brace from Bridgend; Richard Onions, from Portsmouth and Phil Rotheram and Barry Young, from Chesterfield.

They will make overnight stops during the six-day challenge in Horsham, Aylesbury, Atherstone and Macclesfield before arriving in Blackpool.

It’s a third cycling challenge for Richard, 54, who has previously tackled Arch to Arc (Marble Arch to The Arc de Triomph) and six countries in three days.

He’ll be raising money for Warwickshire charity Molly Olly’s Wishes, which was established in 2011 following the death of Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw’s eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

It works to support children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and help with their emotional wellbeing, grants wishes and donates therapeutic toys and books to both children directly and to hospitals throughout the UK.

Mascot of the charity is a therapeutic toy lion called Olly The Brave who has his own Hickman line and a detachable mane which helps to explain and normalise the effects of chemotherapy. These form part of an Olly the Brave pack that has now been handed out to 40 hospitals across the UK along with a book from its exclusive Olly The Brave series.

The charity, which has raised more than £2m, last year funded the first Molly Olly consultant in paediatric palliative medicine at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Richard, who is the Clinical Director and Senior Surgeon at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, met Molly’s dad Tim through their association with the International Socca Federation – the industry-leading organiser of international small-sided football competitions.

He said: “My brother organises a riding challenge every two years and, for his 50th year we thought we should do something different. Originally we were finishing in Paris, but felt for this we should finish in our home town and then have a birthday party  – despite the fact people say we are cycling uphill to Blackpool! I am very proud to be raising money for such an important charity.

“To prepare I try to go out most weekends, Saturday and Sunday first thing before the roads get busy. There are plenty of mountains nearby to develop some stamina. I am excited and nervous at the same time about the prospect of this ride.”

Tim Ollerenshaw is joining the group for one leg of the trip, said: “What Richard is doing is a wonderful thing and all the team at Molly Olly’s are immensely grateful. Donations received enable us to support the lives of children with life threatening illnesses and their families.

“It is a magnificent example of the power of sport to bring everyone together. Richard and I met through 6 a side football and that sense of community is a key thing in all sport – but it seems particularly so in small sided football.”

SOME of the area’s finest gardens are set to go on display in aid of two local causes.

Napton Open Gardens event takes place on Sunday, June 30th when visitors will be welcomed into 11 gardens in the village, including Napton Windmill.

The 19th century windmill was designated a Grade II-listed building in 1952 and lay derelict until around 50 years ago when it was restored and converted into a house.

Proceeds from the event, which last year raised more than £2,000, will be divided between St Lawrence Church in the village and Warwick-based charity Molly Olly’s Wishes.

Molly Olly’s Wishes was established in 2011 following the death of Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw’s eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer. It works to support children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and help with their emotional wellbeing, grants wishes and donates therapeutic toys and books to both children directly and to hospitals throughout the UK.

The charity, which has raised more than £2m, has also been able to fund the first Molly Olly consultant in paediatric palliative medicine at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Organiser Sophie Bonser said: “This is the first time we have given to Molly Olly’s, and we chose it because a lady in the village has a granddaughter with cancer and has had some help from the charity. There are not many of us who have not been affected by cancer in some way. My team are very happy to have them as our chosen charity alongside our village church and hope we raise a lot of money.”

The gardens will be open between 2-6pm and the day will include plant sales and refreshments, cream teas, Pimms and Prosecco, live music and a children’s competition.

Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased on the day from Napton Village Hall.

MORE than £2,000 was raised through dance for Warwick charity Molly Olly’s Wishes thanks to two events at the weekend.

Viva Theatre Arts, Kenilworth

Some 120 people took part in two hours of dance at the Coventry Zumbathon in Square One on Saturday while, the following day, 70 members of Viva Theatre Arts in Kenilworth came together at Warwick School for a showcase of dance, performing from a variety of genres including tap, ballet, jazz, modern and lyrical.

Viva Principal Claudia Temple said: “The students had a wonderful afternoon presenting their dance showcase Once Upon A Time at Warwick Hall to an audience of 300. The show included appearances from dancing peapods, squirrels, jockeys and chess pieces!

“We are currently working out what was raised by the raffle, the programmes, the tombola and the name the Teddy competition and we hope to make some more special children’s Wishes come true with our donation”.

Charity trustee Rachel Ollerenshaw said: “It never ceases to amaze us how brilliant the Viva show is. Claudia and her team work so hard to put everything together to make it happen but of course the children are the stars of the show.

“Each and every one of them put their all into it and the result is both beautiful and emotional to watch. It is a real honour to be able to watch , there is a huge amount of talent and the support that everyone at Viva has given to Molly Olly’s is incredibly kind and very much appreciated.”

Coventry Zumbathon, Molly Olly's Wishes

Of the Zumbathon, she added: “This was such a fun way to raise money. The Molly Olly Team had a great time with Matt at The Zumbathon on Saturday in Coventry. Matt was a brilliant instructor and everyone who attended had a brilliant time keeping fit and raising funds. Even Olly tried out a few moves!

“A big thank you to him for organising and everyone who came along and supported. We loved it.”

People will be putting their best foot forward for the Warwick-based charity and throwing some shapes on the dance floor when Coventry Zumbathon returns on Saturday, May 11th.

For those who prefer to spectate, the following day, Viva Theatre Arts presents its popular annual dance show at Warwick School.

Hundreds of people will be united in two hours of dance for the fifth sponsored Zumbathon at Square One in Coventry, raising money for Molly Olly’s and Myton Hospice.

Organiser Matt Print said: “This time I wanted to support Molly Olly’s Wishes as I have seen the amazing work they do locally.

“A Zumbathon is a great way to unite with friends and family, it’ll feel like a night out and you will leave feeling energised, happy and empowered – albeit a bit sweaty!”

Further information and tickets are available from: www.coventryzumbathon.co.uk and sponsorship forms are available to download by visiting: www.coventryzumbathon.co.uk/sponsorship-form Tickets are also available on the day although booking is advised.

Rachel said: “The charity is hugely grateful to Matt and everyone involved with the Zumbathon for choosing Molly Olly’s alongside Myton Hospice as their charities to support at this year’s Zumbathon. It is a really fun way to raise money and will help raise awareness for children and their families that really need our support.

A raffle also takes place on the day with prizes donated by local businesses.

Last year’s dance show Viva Fever 2018 – Rainbow of Dreams.

The young performers, from schools across the county, are aged between four and 18, including 11-year-old Grace Buttimore from Leamington who makes her swansong appearance for Viva Arts before taking up her place at the prestigious Elmhurst Ballet School in Edgbaston from September.

Grace, who attends Warwick Preparatory School, was one of just 14 girls selected from hundreds of hopefuls after auditioning before a panel of judges.

Tickets for the Viva Arts show are available by calling the box office on 01926 776438 or emailing boxoffice@warwickschool.org or visit online at: www.bridgehousetheatre.co.uk/production/viva-once-upon-a-time/

Viva Principal Claudia Temple said: “We’re proud to now have raised approximately £10,000 for Molly Olly’s Wishes. Everyone at the school was incredibly moved by Molly’s story and there’s something very natural about children helping to raise funds to help support other children less fortunate than themselves, simply by doing something which involves dedication and hard work but is also very enjoyable.

“One of our students and her family benefited from a wish granted by Molly Olly’s during her battle with cancer. Part of Molly’s legacy is to inspire young people to support their friends and their community by giving a little bit back as often as they can. I hope my students take that with them through the rest of their lives.”

Rachel Ollerenshaw said: “Claudia and her team have very kindly supported Molly Olly’s Wishes for several years now and we absolutely love going to watch the shows.

“It is a real pleasure to see all the children who are so talented and the show is so professionally done. So much work goes on to putting it all together.”
