If, like me, you have an appetite for trying new things when it comes to a foodie’s night out, this could be one for you.

Two established names in the independent food and drink sector in Stratford have combined to create an exclusive tasting evening with a difference.

And what a mouthwatering partnership this is.

The unique culinary experience began in the charming setting of Judith’s (so-called after Shakespeare’s youngest daughter) – the tasting room of award-winning Shakespeare Distillery. What a delightful opener to the evening as we enjoyed a fun, yet informative mini gin and rum tasting session.

Our host Sam Evans served up the perfect formula of tips and sips as his captive audience soaked up the stories behind each of the distillery’s botanical blends, a commentary that continued throughout dinner as the drinks were served.

Founded in 2015, Stratford-upon-Avon’s only working distillery produces a series of sprits including its signature Stratford Dry Gin, Jester Rums, and distillery specials.

With our thirst for knowledge – and botanicals – satisfied, it was then a short stroll to the much-anticipated main event of the evening – a five-course tasting dinner at The Woodsman Restaurant, at Hotel Indigo.

Led by Executive Head Chef Greg Newman, The Woodsman delivers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on sustainability, seasonality, and locally sourced produce.

Only the finest quality ingredients find their way onto The Woodsman menus, all sourced as sustainably as possible and much of it even harvested themselves. All meats are ‘nose to tail so the menu is ever-changing and nothing is wasted. A huntsman delivers game from their own estates, whist chefs source the freshest seasonal produce from local farmers, makers, foragers and their very own botanical and herb garden.

And it’s nights like this when Greg’s ingredients – and versatility – can truly shine, as showcased in his exclusive Gin and Rum Pairing Menu.

From the Arrival Snacks and Bread through the next four courses, there was plenty for foodies to explore and wow factor to enjoy – and all dishes, of course, thoughtfully paired with gin and rum-based treats to wash them down.

Gin Cured Chalk Stream Trout, (with cucumber chutney, burnt grapefruit and smoked horseradish), pictured, accompanied by a classic G&T came first.

Then it was Jerk Chicken Terrine paired with Jesters Honey Rum, followed by Glazed Creedy Carver Duck Breast (with duck leg croquette, ember baked beetroot and cherry) paired with Mulberry gin bramble cocktail and closing on an equally high note with Aerated Lemon Verbena Tart (with English strawberries and elderflower ice cream), washed down with – an unexpectedly delicious – Limoncello and Elderflower Meringue Sour cocktail. (I’m not usually a limoncello fan but I’d have quite happily sipped on this all night.

Overall, it’s fair to say that every dish was a veritable sensation for the senses, tasting as incredible as they looked and demonstrating the culinary excellence and finesse with which Greg and The Woodsman have become renowned.

Sam Evans of Shakespeare Distillery gets the evening off the great start at Judith’s Place.

While I applaud – and am intrigued by – this concept, for me, gin and cocktails work less well than the traditional wine pairings. I couldn’t quite keep up with the alcohol consumption as the food continued to reach our tables. (Although, in fairness, that may say more about my capacity to hold liquor than anything else!!) Nevertheless, an exceptional evening of flavour, heritage and craftmanship which, whether or not you’re a gin lover, one can’t help but to enjoy. An experience to savour – but definitely book an Uber!

More exclusive tasting evenings are planned so watch this space if the idea appeals! But, in the meantime, why not check out The Woodsman’s Sunday afternoon barbecue menus, running from July 20th, from 5pm.

INDICO Solihull

Time to spice up your taste buds, Solihull. Indico, the much-loved Indian street food restaurant, is bringing its bold flavours, vibrant colours and lively atmosphere to a brand-new location at Touchwood Shopping Centre.

After years of serving up delicious dishes at Parkgate Shopping Centre, Indico has moved to an even bigger and brighter home in the heart of Solihull’s shopping scene.

The new Touchwood location certainly signals a bold new chapter for the independent brand. Formerly known for its vibrant Bollywood-themed interiors that danced with colour, texture, and cinematic flair, the restaurant has relocated and with it comes a new design direction, one of understated elegance and elevated charm.

INDICO Solihull

Situated on the ground floor, the team have reinvented the space with a quiet, elegant decor. Think soft ambient lighting, textured neutrals, artisan finishes, and carefully curated details that whisper sophistication. Whilst still paying homage to India with quirky nods to Mumbai street culture like the push bike and caricature moustache.

Indico prides itself on taking diners on a flavourful adventure through the bustling streets of India. The menu is bursting with authentic Indian street food – think sizzling chaat, crispy samosas, smoky tandoori grills, and rich, aromatic curries. Whether you’re a fan of fiery spices or comforting classics like butter chicken and dal makhani, there’s a wide range of culinary choices.

INDICO Solihull

Vegetarians and vegans are in for a treat too, with a wide range of fresh, wholesome plant-based options crafted with traditional Indian flair like pau bhaji and bhel puri.

Cocktails will also be a star attraction in the new home, with offerings such as From Goa With Love made with Goan single malt whiskey and Full Moon made with Elderflower Gin.

Operations Manager Ranjit Singh said : “We’ve loved serving our customers at Parkgate, but moving to Touchwood is an exciting new chapter for Indico. This vibrant space allows us to welcome even more guests and give them the full Indico experience – great food, great vibes, and a little slice of India right here in Solihull.”

Tony Elvin, General Manager at Touchwood is equally excited about having a new independent restaurant in the centre. He says: “As a Shirley resident and long-time fan of Indico Street Kitchen, both here and in Birmingham, I am very excited to welcome Indico to Touchwood. During my tenure as General Manager we have dramatically increased the volume of independent dining options, each one adding a point of difference and bringing their own unique personality to Touchwood. Indy dining gives guests added incentive to shop here rather than anywhere else and Indico will do exactly that.”

Local foodie star partners with foodbank to help tackle poverty

Local foodie star partners with foodbank to help tackle poverty

A Leamington foodie and presenter is helping to shine a spotlight on the efforts of a local charity to help tackle the rising food crisis in the area.

Bianca Rodrigues-Perry took a step behind the scenes for a project partnering with Coventry-based Feed The Hungry UK, for a special two-part episode of her YouTube show, entitled Shop Smart, released this week.

Feed The Hungry is a charity that supports people who are struggling to access food. This includes both international feeding programmes and projects based here in the UK. Two of Feed The Hungry’s local projects are Lillington Community Pantry, located in Leamington Spa, and Coventry foodbank, which is one of the largest foodbanks in the UK.

Bianca raised awareness by visiting both the Pantry and the Foodbank and using her platform to explore ways of shopping smart on a limited budget and making best use of basic ingredients.

She was joined by her production crew, along with friends and family before Christmas, to pack food parcels, destined for the 15 foodbank centres across the city.

The first part of the episode also captures her visit to the food pantry where she selected £5 worth of ingredients from which to cook four recipes in the Foodbank kitchen – Galinhada (rice cooked on chicken sauce); Chilli Con Carne from the tin (that she enhanced by adding garlic, onions, chopped tomatoes, spices, beans and fresh coriander); Chicken and Potato Soup; and Saute Cabbage and Red Pesto.

Bianca and Gavin film part of the special episode of Bia’s Kitchen Show at The Feed The Hungry warehouse.

Bianca and her team brought a special buzz during her filming at the Halo Centre warehouse, in Binley, where, for the second part of the episode, she was filmed in the kitchen with Foodbank founder Canon Gavin Kibble MBE. The show also looks at the wider work of the international charity through interviews with volunteers and visitors.

Bianca said: “This episode of Bia’s Kitchen Show, titled Shop Smart, is incredibly close to my heart. I had the honour of partnering with Coventry Foodbank – a local initiative doing incredible work in the community – which is part of the global charity Feed the Hungry. “Through them, I was introduced to the Lillington Pantry, a space where people facing financial hardship can shop with dignity, paying just £5 to choose the food that suits their needs.

“To support the project, I created the concept of Shop Smart, which is the heart of this episode. I wanted to share practical tips on how to make a small budget go further – by planning meals in advance, combining fresh and tinned ingredients, and cutting down on waste.

“I even created three recipes on the spot during my visit! Later, I joined Gavin – the amazing founder of Coventry Foodbank – in the Community Kitchen, where surplus food is turned into wholesome meals for those who need them most.

She added: “Coming from a country where food insecurity is part of daily life, this experience really touched me. I’m proud to use my platform to shine a light on vital projects like this – and I truly believe it’s only the beginning. When we come together, we can make a real difference – one smart shop and one warm meal at a time.”

Coventry Foodbank distributes food through 15 partner churches and works closely with a wide range of care professionals who identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher.

Clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers also meet them over a warm drink and can signpost them to other organisations to help resolve the longer-term problems that might cause someone to need to use a foodbank.

Gavin Kibble MBE said of the filming: “The vibrancy and dynamism of Bia in a kitchen environment is wonderful. It was lovely to work with her for a day producing a meal from £5 of ingredients from the Community Pantry. She produced a veritable feast of Brazilian-infused food ramped up to a different level of taste and excitement.

“We really appreciate the time she spent with us. I think we were all deeply impacted by her energy and enthusiasm and her creativity and we look forward to hopefully working with her again in the future.”

The Bia’s Kitchen brand was born in January last year, in which time it has won awards as well as the affections of a loyal and growing UK audience.

The food Bianca purchased for £5 from the pantry.

Bianca added: “We hope our support and the special episode of the show dedicated to the work of Coventry Foodbank and Feed The Hungry, can help make a difference.”

Review: The Restaurant Tour – Jewellery Quarter Edition

Review: The Restaurant Tour – Jewellery Quarter Edition

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

Dining out these days is about much more than just the food as restaurants are feeling the pressure to increasingly up their game by offering the full ‘experience.’

A great way of doing this is with a food tour. There’s something special about exploring a city through some of its best food hotspots. And, as someone who loves to champion independents, it’s also a fabulous opportunity to bring new customers to new doors.

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

On a Sunday afternoon I joined the Restaurant Tour UK on a mission to visit six restaurants within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. It is one of several in the city you can choose from, including City Centre, canal-side at Brindley Place, The Mailbox and Edgbaston.

The idea behind the Restaurant Tour is simple – spend up to five hours enjoying a small plate of food and a drink at six stops. It’s perfect for foodies who want to sample diverse cuisines and restaurants without committing to just one. And what better way of exploring the local food and drink scene? Certainly beats a Google search!

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

As someone who has joined a few food tours whilst on holiday abroad, this one is a first in that it’s self-guided meaning you’re able to go at your own pace, between 12pm and 5pm, and dine within your own group, just as you would normally at restaurants.

It is organised in a fixed order that is arranged by the designated free app, to make it easy going to each location. We never had more than 12 minutes’ walk between locations – although, to be honest, a brisk walk and some fresh air between courses was welcomed.

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

Each house speciality is offered with a wine pairing or non-alcoholic beverage, with allergies also being considered at the time of purchase, to ensure it is accessible to all.

The Jewellery Quarter edition features a diverse range of restaurants including Pasta di Piazza, Rajdoot, The Church Pub, Temper and Brown, Lasan, Arch 13 Bar and Saint Paul’s House, bringing a mixture of authentic Indian cuisine, Italian and traditional pub food to the afternoon’s menu.

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

From topless meat pies through to Indian fine dining, roast chicken Sunday lunch and wine and cheese plates, the Jewellery Quarter Edition of the Tour was the gift that just kept on giving until, we could receive no more! Six dishes is a lot to consume – and it’s worth bearing in mind that these are usually larger plates than those you’d expect to be served in a traditional six-course tasting menu.

The Restaurant Tour: Jewellery Quarter Edition, Birmingham

So in order to get the most out of your experience, my advice would be to skip breakfast that morning and, if your appetite is on the smaller side but you still want to participate, enjoy samples only of the larger dishes. And worth noting – don’t assume there is dessert at the final location. It wasn’t the case for us. Roast chicken dinner was course number six!

Take one afternoon, six incredible dishes and sprinkle in some added mystery of what’s coming next, and you have the ingredients for a fantastic Sunday afternoon. With a delicious variety of different cuisines and dishes, each restaurant brought something different to the table and enticed our tastebuds in new directions. (A good thing for me as I do tend to play safe and avoid culinary experimentation.)

This experience was more than just great food – it was an adventure – gently coaxing us out of our comfort zones to open us to the world of culinary diversity the city has to offer. And we found some brilliant restaurants we’ll definitely be returning to!
