Foodbank hopes open days help foster campaign support

Covenbry Foodbank, Essentials Campaign
Coventry Foodbank Project Manager Dee Ward

Coventry Foodbank is inviting people to a series of open days to learn more about its support for the Guarantee Our Essentials Campaign, which calls for the government to reform Universal Credit ensuring that essentials are affordable to all.

They are joining more than 100 foodbanks across the UK taking action to support the call for an Essentials Guarantee, hoping to build on the momentum of a Foodbank Day of Action event last month and a national petition, which already has more than 11,000 signatures.

The Guarantee Essentials Campaign is being run by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Trussell Trust, a charity supporting a network of more than 1,400 foodbank centres across the UK.

Since the start of the year, the city’s food bank has been forced to use its cash reserves to buy over 20 tons of food. Some 70% of people now referred to food banks are in receipt of Universal Credit but around 90% of low-income households receiving Universal Credit are going without at least one essential like food, a warm home or toiletries.

A single person claiming universal credit in the UK receives £85 a week while a couple receives around £134. Research by The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has shown that a single person needs at least £120 a week to cover essential costs – while a couple needs at least £200 per week.

The continued struggle comes in the wake of concerning findings by the Trussell Trust’s ‘The State of Hunger report’ *– the largest ever study into hunger and foodbank use in the UK – which suggest that one in five people in the country has gone without food over the past year on a regular basis.

Visitors to open days at the Coventry warehouse in Progress Way, will have the chance to learn more about the campaign and how they can support it, as well as the various ways they can support the foodbank directly. They take place at 10am-1pm on October 7th and 10am-12pm on December 9th and 16th.

Dee Ward Project Manager, Coventry Foodbank said: “We hear it time and time again from the public we engage with that food banks should not be needed in this country, it’s wrong, it’s terrible. Sadly, for the most basic of items to help them survive the next few days, why should anyone be asking a charity for food, washing powder to wash their child’s school uniform or even a toilet roll because they cannot afford to buy it themselves?

“It is really important that people understand that if the basic universal benefit of £85 was raised to meet the core costs then people would not be pushed into a place where they need to visit a foodbank to support them and provide the most basic of essentials.

“To afford even these core essential costs a single person £120 a week, however the basic rate of Universal Credit is just £85 a week. This is already too low, yet people needing to use our food bank can have up to 25% of that deducted to repay debts, such as advance payments and budgeting loans from the Department for Work & Pensions.

Coventry Foodbank, Essentials Campaign
Coventry Labout MP , Zarah Sultana joins Foodbank volunteers to collect names for the Essentials Campaign petition last month.

“We’re proud of the work that we’re doing to help meet the needs of our community, but we don’t want to exist. We believe everyone should have enough money to be able to afford to buy food and other essentials. If you agree, then please sign up and add your support to those that have already done so.”

The current cost of living crisis has impacted everyone with higher energy costs, housing and mortgage rises and especially food costs. This year has seen donations plummet while demand for the service has risen exponentially.

Committing her continued support to the campaign, Zarah Sultana, Labour MP for Coventry South, said: “In one of the richest countries in the world, everyone should have enough to lead a decent life, but millions of people in Britain are struggling and it’s only got worse with the cost-of-living crisis.

“Parents tell me about having to skip meals so their kids have something to eat and I know people across the city fear the cold winter months and sky-high bills. And it’s heart-breaking to see that people who once donated to the Foodbank have now become reliant on its services.

“That’s why I am supporting the Guarantee the Essentials campaign, joining Coventry Foodbank to call on the Government to raise Universal Credit and ensure everyone has enough.”

“I pay tribute to the charities and volunteers in organisations like Coventry Foodbank and Feed The Hungry UK, who operate food banks to help those struggling to get by.”

Review: Sinatra The Musical

Review: Sinatra The Musical

Sinatra The Musical, Birmingham Repertory Theatre,

Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre has once again put its city on the world stage.

And it couldn’t be more fitting. The world premiere of Sinatra The Musical coincides with the 70th anniversary of crooner Frank Sinatra’s 1953 UK tour.

What makes this production extra special is that it’s the first official musical to focus on the life and work of the iconic singer.

It is New Year’s Eve, 1942, and a skinny 27-year-old Italian American singer is about to step onto the stage of New York’s Paramount Theatre and give a performance that will change music history.

Ana Villafañe (Ava Gardner) and Matt Doyle (Frank Sinatra)

As Frank Sinatra’s career suddenly skyrockets, he struggles with balancing the love of his wife, Nancy, against the demands and temptations of being the most popular singer in America. But when he begins a torrid affair with movie goddess Ava Gardner, his records stop selling and the press turns against him, sending his career into a tailspin. Driven by his devotion to his family, Sinatra employs his peerless artistry and dogged determination to stage the greatest comeback in showbiz history.

The show’s writer, two-time Tony Award-winner Joe Dipietro focuses on Sinatra’s early career, exploring how he rose to fame, crashed spectacularly and then made one of the most dramatic showbusiness comebacks to cement his place as one of the most popular entertainers of the 20th century.

Phoebe Panaretos (Nancy), Matt Doyle (Frank) and Ana Villafañe (Ava)

More than doing justice to a lead role of such titanic proportions is Matt Doyle whose portrayal is endorsed by Tina Sinatra herself, youngest of the singer’s three children and part of the production team.

Doyle is, in showbiz parlons, a triple threat. He has a voice of silk, accomplished acting skills (he even has Sinatra’s mannerisms down pat) and, as he occasionally shows us, can even dance a bit!

Appearing in almost every scene, Doyle is the pulsating heart of a show which I have no doubt is set to take the world by storm.

Outstanding performances all round from a talented ensemble, including Phoebe Panaretos as Nancy Sinatra, Ava Villafañe as Ava Gardner and Dawn Buckland, who brought some laughs as Frank’s doting, but meddlesome mother, Dolly.

And all seamlessly weaved together with 26 of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ hits which help drive the story.

Sinatra The Musical, Birmingham Repertory Theatre,

So much more than a so-called jukebox musical, this production delivers on all fronts. A raw but sympathetic portrayal of an artist fighting for his own sound while also facing the consequences of the temptations of Hollywood.

Whether or not you class yourself as a fan of his music, you’ll not fail to be swept up by this stunning spectacle of a show. Quite simply, one of the best I’ve ever had the privilege to enjoy. (And I’ve seen a lot in my 53 years!)

Go see it. You’ll thank me later.

Sinatra; The Musical plays at The Birmingham Repertory Theatre until October 28th. Tickets are available here or on 0121 236 4455.

Review: The Full Monty

Review: The Full Monty

The Full Monty, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry

We’ve all seen the iconic 90s movie and now the award-winning hit play puts the heartfelt story – and other things(!) – front and centre at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre this week.

This brand new production of The Full Monty proves to be still very much of our time. Set against the backdrop of a cost of living crisis, Gaz and his mates are down on their luck, with no job, status or income, but determined to hatch a plan to make money.

And so the inspiration comes to form an impromptu – and unlikely – strip act. But if they’re guaranteed to make it pay they need to go a step further than the raunchy rivals recently in town, and go the full monty!

The show – and the film before it – succeeds because it has integrity and heart. Director Michael Gyngell puts it very well when he says it’s not about stripping but rather why they strip.

It’s all carried off beautifully by a cast which includes a host of familiar faces – Danny Hatchard, (Lee Carter Eastenders); Jake Quickenden (X-Factor and Dancing On Ice) and Bill Ward (Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street and James Barton in Emmerdale).

A carefully chosen soundtrack of classics also cleverly captures the rollercoaster of emotions that are such a driving element throughout the show.

For Full Monty first-timers a warning that it’s not an easy watch at times (beware of a possible trigger moment in an attempted suicide scene) but it is not out of keeping with this gritty and, at times, raw storyline. (It’s recommended for over 14s)

This does not detract however from the laughs, of which there are plenty. But there’s certainly a sense of laughing with them, not at them, and we’re rooting for them throughout.

The final scene is its most famous – and most anticipated(!) – and one can only admire their nerve as actors. But respect to the lighting team who are tasked with timing their stage blackout to perfection to protect the cast’s modesty!

The show is best summed up by their introduction ahead of their finale performance. . . “They may not be young, they may not be pretty and they may not be right good. But for one night and one night only, they’re here, they’re live and they’re going the full monty.”

A glorious and delirious production that is also earnest. Grab your pals for a cheeky night of entertainment that you won’t regret. And you can leave your hat on!

The Full Monty plays at The Belgrade Theatre until Saturday. Tickets are available from the box office here or call02476 553055.
