Locals will be able to get their first glimpse of Leamington’s newest restaurant on Friday when the doors finally open to Tavola.

It marks an exciting new chapter in the history of the well-known 200-year-old venue, in Clarendon Street, following a period of closure and transformation.

Tavola, Leamington Spa

The former 44 Café reopens in its new guise on May 10th sporting a theme and décor inspired by Italian surrealist painters of the 1920’s – he vision of Birmingham-based design company Faber.

Proprietor Rob Singleton said: “Tavola is a homage to the bars and trattoria of northern Italy and Rome where the best Italian ingredients are prepared with love, care, and skill and where hospitality is done right.

Tavola, Leamington Spa

“We feel we have created somewhere our neighbourhood can be proud of, somewhere our guests will always find a warm, open-armed welcome.

“Team members who have grown up in Leamington as well as Italy make up our front of house. We all have the same values around hospitality and every member of the team is here because they love people and love nothing more than being part of the most enjoyable parts of people’s lives, eating and drinking and being together.

“The rebranding is a natural extension of the refurbishment and history that we are proud of.”

Heading up the team is a familiar face to regulars, Luke Hampson, who stayed on as front of house manager and mixologist after several years in the business’s more recent history.

Central to the restaurant’s new culinary identity though is Tuscan executive chef, Martin Serafino. Martin looks forward to showcasing his passion for authentic Italian cooking through his new menu, the secret to which is, he says, a combination of ‘tradition and innovation.’

“I’m very excited for this new menu. I want to encourage people to try something they never tried before,” he said.

“I love to express myself through food so there will be some experimenting. But my main goal is to share the beauty of my own country as well as celebrating how every country has different traditions and different ways to cook.”

As well as seasonal and specials menus, Martin is also serving up his signature Schiacciata sandwich range – using a special Tuscan pressed focaccia made fresh on the premises.

Visitors to Tavola – which translates from Italian as ‘a table you would dine at’ – can choose from a new Bottomless Brunch Menu, available every day of the week between 11am-4pm.

Northern Italy inspires the drinks menu too where the art of aperitivo means after work drinks are accompanied by antipasti sharing plates of calamari, olives, and crostini.

Rob said: “We needed to create a space where our guests can both grab a sandwich and a coffee in the day, then come back in the evening to spend a few leisurely hours eating and drinking while enjoying good company.

“Being a wheelchair user myself, I realise the importance of accessibility and inclusivity and understand the positive impact those adaptations would have. We have completed the first phase of refurbishment, while in the planning stage for the next phase involving ramped access and an accessible toilet and we will announce plans in due course.”

“We look forward to welcoming our first guests and unveiling the vibrant and fresh new look. It’s a look which befits this quirky building and complements the imaginative new menu as we start this new chapter.”

Molly Ollys, Enchanted Tea Room

Families are being invited to don their thinking caps for a fun Enchanted Family Quiz Night in aid of a local children’s charity.

The event, on May 31st, is hosted by Enchanted Tea Room in Leamington, and will include a Disney-themed quiz as well as the chance to meet and greet favourite princesses – all in aid of Molly Ollys, based in Warwick.

The charity was established in 2011 by Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw following the death of their eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

It works to support children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and help with their emotional wellbeing as well as providing wishes and donating therapeutic toys and books to both children directly and to hospitals throughout the UK.

The therapeutic toy lion called Olly The Brave who has his own Hickman line and a detachable mane which helps to explain and normalise the effects of chemotherapy. These form part of an Olly The Brave pack that has now been handed out to more than 70 hospitals or health centres, along with a set of books from the charity’s exclusive Olly The Brave series.

The award-winning Enchanted Tea Room provides tailor-made family-friendly events in fairytale and princess-themed party and pamper rooms in Bath Street.

Molly Ollys, Birmingham Children's Hospital

Proprietor Kelly Iles, said: “At Enchanted we grant free wishes for any child that needs us and these have included hundreds of children locally and across the UK, from a child wishing to meet their favourite princess to end-of-life goodbye parties and zoom calls to hospitals.

“We have also granted many local children their final wishes with a full princess funeral escort and singing them their favourite songs as we know how important these moments are to families.”

She added: “Working alongside Molly Ollys, who grant so many wishes, we realise the importance of them and creating the perfect memories for families. It is a charity that always inspires us in everything they do so supporting them in fundraising is essential to keep granting wishes for those children and families who need them most.”

The event starts at 5.30pm and tickets, which are £10 per person, are available by emailing: sophie@mollyolly.co.uk or calling 01926 698735.

Review: The Woman In Black

Review: The Woman In Black

Photos by Mark Douet.

Over 33 years Susan Hill’s The Woman In Black played over 13,000 performances in the West End and has been seen by over 7-million people in the UK. Finally, as part of its nationwide tour, it has now made its way to Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre.

Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt, The Woman In Black tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they delve further into his darkest memories the borders between make-believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep.

Belgrade Theatre, The Woman In Black

The spooky setting for the second act is a house surrounded by marshes in a remote village in the North of England, where Kipps sifts through documents belonging to the late Mrs Alice Drablow, the owner of Eel Marsh House.

Walsall-born Malcolm James returns to The Woman in Black having first played Arthur ‘Kipps’ on a UK Tour and then at the Fortune Theatre. He is more than ably supported in this two-man show by Mark Hawkins who, together, bring this classic story to spine-tingling life.

Belgrade Theatre, The Woman In Black

A newcomer to The Woman In Black (despite its longevity), I felt it was a bit slow to get going and yet, there was always a sense of the creeping tension and an anticipation that the second half would have plenty in store!

And that it did! From blood curdling screams to shadowy figures, the clever staging of this show proved that edge-of-the-seat suspense is just as achievable in a live production as it is on the big screen. (Something I had been previously less convinced about.)

It’s a small cast and crew – headed up by creative team of director Robin Herford, designer Michael Holt and lighting by Kevin Sleep – but they deliver a mighty couple of hours of theatre.

Belgrade Theatre, The Woman In Black

Perhaps not one for those of a nervous disposition(!), but definitely otherwise worth a ticket. Just be brave and try and resist watching the second half from behind your hands (as my friend did) so as not to miss it!

The Woman In Black plays at The Belgrade until Saturday, May 4th. Tickets start from £18 and can be purchased here.

Excitement hots up for local foodie vying for triple national awards success

Excitement hots up for local foodie vying for triple national awards success

When it comes to awards, Leamington’s favourite food champion Bianca Rodrigues-Perry certainly has an appetite for winning!

The Brazilian-born entrepreneur is making a big mark on her new community, after being named as a finalist for three national awards.

In June she will learn if she’s been named Outstanding Entrepreneur or Start-up of the Year in the Ladies First Network Business and Inspirational Women Awards and Business Start-up of the Year in the Business Success Recognition Awards.

The recognition follows the launch, in January, of Bianca’s new pilot TV show championing local businesses – and now reaching over 32.5k followers on Instagram alone, with some of the episodes reaching 3.6k views on YouTube in less than 24 hours – and growing.

Bianca said: “I feel honoured to be acknowledged, not just for an award, but also as an entrepreneur starting out. It’s a surreal feeling when your ideas materialise. I am proud and also grateful to everyone who nominated me, and I hope we can keep inspiring our community.”

Bia’s Kitchen Show highlights some of the best of the area’s foodie scene when it’s streamed to audiences twice monthly on YouTube, Spotify, Instagram and Facebook.

It is an extension to the successful Bia’s Kitchen brand and features local independent chefs and restaurateurs cooking signature dishes as well as Bianca’s own top tips and recipes.

The passion project also marks the latest chapter on a journey of reinvention for the 44-year-old Brazilian-born mum-of-three, who walked away from a high-flying career in marketing in Rio de Janeiro after meeting a Leamington man.

Despite huge transition in her life, the one constant has been her passion for cooking. She started cooking for friends, hosted cooking classes in Warwick and even a pop-up restaurant in Kenilworth. Buoyed by the positive feedback – and a win on Channel Four’s Couples Come Dine With Me TV show – she launched herself as a private chef and reignited her entrepreneurial spirit with successful businesses – Fresh to Freeze, a pre-cooked food delivery business which thrived throughout the pandemic – and Bia’s Kitchen.

Bianca is planning the release of the first in a series of books later this year, compiling some of her guests’ best recipes, the profits from which will support two causes close to her heart – post-natal depression and mental health.

The Ladies First Awards ceremony takes place at Dallas Burston Polo Club, in Southam, on June 13th while the Business Success Recognition Awards will be announced on June 29th at The Eastside Rooms in Birmingham.

Ladies First co-director Tracey McAtamney said: “Bianca is a force of nature! Her enthusiasm and passion for cooking lights up a room and encourages others around her to appreciate food for both business and relaxation.”
