Volunteers sought for The Myton Hospices’ Leamington Spa Half Marathon this weekend

Volunteers sought for The Myton Hospices’ Leamington Spa Half Marathon this weekend

Kirsty Leahy and volunteer at Leamington Half Marathon

Volunteers are being invited to step forward and lend their support to ensure the smooth running of the sixth Leamington Spa Half Marathon, which returns this weekend.

The event, organised by Raceways CIC, has again partnered with Myton, which has three hospices in Coventry, Rugby and Warwick, and have the only Hospice Inpatient beds in Coventry and Warwickshire. They care for people living with a wide range of life-limiting illnesses including Respiratory, Heart & Neurological conditions, Cancer and Organ failure.

Volunteers need to be available between 7am and 1pm and roles range from course marshals, drink station marshals, manager assistants and those able to help set up and break down the event.

Leamington Half Marathon

Kirsty Leahy, of KLP, is hosting the event for the fifth year. She said: “All the events proceeds go direct to the charity partners. Without our super awesome volunteers, many of whom have been with us for a long time, we would not have been able to fund a large amount of the amazing work they have carried out over the years.

“Our volunteers are at the core of our events and we always need you so if you’re reading this and you’d like to be a part of our volunteer event crew we’d really love to hear from you. Volunteers vary from those with absolutely no experience through to managers from the London 2012 Olympic Games. Anyone who’d like to get involved is welcome.”

Runners will have the option to enter the race for free by committing to fundraising £100 for The Myton Hospices, and a portion of the profits from the race will be donated directly to the charity to help fund the continued support of their patients and families.

All runners receive a finishers medal to collect at the finish line, and they have the option to purchase a race T shirt as well. The Myton Hospices will also be hosting the Kids Fun Run, the Myton Kids Mile, which is free to enter with all kids getting a medal!

Kirsty Leahy and volunteer at Leamington Half Marathon

Kirsty added: “This year Myton Hospice needs to raise £10.5 million to continue providing their services free of charge to people living with life-limiting illness, and their families, across Coventry and Warwickshire. Every entry to the race helps us to support Myton in continuing to provide incredible palliative and end of life care, enabling people to live well for longer with a terminal diagnosis. They can’t do it without your support!”

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the numbers this year. We’re going to be able to support Myton hospice in so many ways but we do need extra volunteers to help on the day!”

For more details about volunteering, email office@raceways.org.uk or challangeevents@mytonhospice.org

Entries are still open for runners. Visit here or register at the information tent at the Pump Rooms the day before, between 12-5pm or Sunday morning until 7.30am.

Local foodie champion helps ensure new festival has the recipe for success

Bianca Rodrigues-Perry, Pursuits Festival, warwick

Local entrepreneur and foodie champion Bianca Rodrigues-Perry will be shining a spotlight on some of the best independent street food chefs when she hosts Warwick’s first Pursuits Festival this weekend.

There are fun prizes up for grabs in Bia’s Bake-off Competition for children, on Saturday. Youngsters are being offered the chance to bring their own home-made cakes to be judged by professional make caker Sophie Page from Coventry. While the adults will be treated to a series of cocktail making demos throughout Sunday courtesy of That Gin Company, based in Warwick, and Warwickshire Gin Company, based in Leamington.

Pursuits Festival, Warwick, Bianca Rodrigues-Perry
The festival takes place at St Nicholas Park in Warwick

Warwick Pursuits Festival is a two-day community event celebrating music, art and culture, with an array of activities for families to enjoy for free. Its arrival in Warwick follows Stratford’s successful event held in May, which attracted thousands of people across two days.

Bia’s Kitchen Show highlights some of the best of the independent foodie scene when it is streamed to audiences twice monthly on YouTube, Spotify, Instagram and Facebook. It is an extension to the successful Bia’s Kitchen brand and features local independent chefs and restaurateurs cooking signature dishes as well as Bianca’s own top tips and recipes.

Bianca, from Leamington, said: “I am incredibly excited to be involved in this fabulous new event which shares my same values of supporting independent food and drink businesses. I’m looking forward to playing my part in championing some of these businesses by introducing their stories and flavours to the festival-goers. Behind every successful small business is a story of passion and dedication that I look forward to sharing, whilst having a lot of fun along the way with some competitions and giveaways.”

Stepping into the Bia’s Kitchen Show spotlight at this weekend’s festival will be Bongo Bunee Chow, Dough & Brew, Mister V Street Food, Redfern Kitchen, Sunkanya ThaiFood, Shakespeare Spit Roast, The Magic Kingdom and Dough Ay’ We.

Pursuits Festival, Warwick, Bianca Rodrigues-Perry

Alongside family-friendly activities, there will be art installations, interactive experiences, workshops, live music from local acts and great food and drink.

Mixing it up away from his bar throughout Sunday, That Gin Company’s Steve Bazell will be on hand to deliver some mini cocktail masterclasses on Bia’s stage.

Festival Director Kate Livingston said: “Slate events is continuously pushing the envelope when it comes to festival experiences, which is why we are delighted to have the support of Bia’s Kitchen, a renowned Instagram influencer in the culinary space, hosting a stage where she will interview our local vendors. This will shine a spotlight on the incredible food establishments in our community.

“Our vendors’ participation and support are crucial to making events like this happen, especially at a time when funding for free festivals is hard to come by. We hope this initiative will not only make our festival more interactive and exciting but also provide a valuable platform for our local food vendors to showcase their amazing work to a broader audience.

“We look forward to highlighting the delightful culinary offerings we have locally and attracting more visitors from further afield to experience our vibrant food scene.”

She added: “This festival is for the community of Warwick – local businesses, community groups, charities, and people who live and work here. The success of the Stratford event stemmed from its clear links to the town itself and its community, and we can’t wait to do the same in Warwick with its own unique festival that really champions the town and provides a platform for the local community to engage with and explore what makes their town special  – not to mention bringing people from far and wide to get a taste of the great place Warwick is to live, work and visit.”

A popular village pub in Warwickshire has been named among The Top 100 Restaurants for Outdoor Dining in 2024 by OpenTable.

The Fleur de Lys, in Lowsonford has been praised for being ‘ideally situated for walkers and ramblers who wish to explore the canal towpath or a variety of local walks’ and for its ‘great homemade food and inviting atmosphere.’

The pub sits on the banks of the Stratford Canal, between winding country roads that used to be part of the Forest of Arden, and boasts an acre of land, making it a popular stop-off for canal users.

The dog-friendly pub also has a 4-star rating on Tripadvisor, 4.4-star rating on Google reviews and a 4.5 out of 5 on OpenTable.

Licensees Nick and Emma Woodhouse, who moved to Warwickshire from Bristol to take over at The Fleur, are passionate about hospitality and have combined 30 years of experience in the industry. They work hard to protect the legacy and integrity of the inn, which they recognise as a valued part of local history.

The menu is curated with hearty pub dishes, with the freshest and most local ingredients used by first-class butchers, fishmongers, and grocers. There is also a Sunday menu, Specials Board and – of course – a garden menu for those dining al-fresco.

Emma said: “We’re delighted that the Fleur De Lys has been recognised as the place to visit for outdoor dining as it’s such a special place nestled in the Warwickshire countryside. There are so many beautiful walks around the canal and village, after which you’ll definitely have earned one of our award-winning pies! It’s the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of life, whether you arrive by car, bike, on foot or by boat!

“Our garden boasts an acre of land to run riot on and a low-level wooden children’s playground, alongside over 30 tables and benches. If you’re intending on zooming through this part of Warwickshire on a bicycle, The Fleur makes an excellent intermediary watering hole to fortify you for the ride ahead.”

The Fleur De Lys – which translates as Flower of Life – started out as a row of three 15th-century cottages which became canal workers’ accommodation that were later knocked together. It wasn’t until the early 20th century when it first opened as a tavern, later going on to introduce the ‘pioneering’ idea of serving food and giving rise to the now famous Fleur De Lys pies.

Later this month Emma and Nick are hosting a special weekend event to celebrate their 10th anniversary as custodians of the pub.

‘Fleur Fest,’ on June 29th-30th, promises a host of entertainment and activities throughout the weekend, from live musicians and performers – including stilt walkers and bubbleology – to craft and circus skills workshops, market and charity stalls and a dog show with prizes!
