Review: The Almanack, Kenilworth

The Almanack, Kenilworth

Now summer has finally arrived it’s good news to hear about another pub in the area adding an outdoor eating area to their offering.

And the Almanack in Kenilworth is the perfect place to dine al fresco with the launch of its new seasonal menu, which we were invited to try.

But there continues to be the warmest of welcomes in all weathers inside with a team of friendly and knowledgeable staff who are attentive without being intrusive.

The Almanack, Kenilworth

The Almanack chefs cook with the best of British produce in season and for summer there’s so much to choose from; the best native fish, Devon crab, heirloom tomatoes and sweet English berries alongside free-range chicken and Jimmy Butler Blythborough pork, and the finest British grass-fed beef from Aubrey Allen, 28 day dry-aged for incredible flavour.  All the pub’s steaks, Sunday roast beef joints and burgers are supplied by Leamington’s famous butcher Aubrey Allen, a name more commonly seen in Michelin-starred restaurants than local pubs.

The new summer menu is bursting with freshness and zing, from Devon crab cake with creamy avocado, spicy radish and sweet pea shoots to start, Or enjoy to a light dish of grilled courgette and artichokes with whipped Crematta – creamy but dairy-free – zippy Romesco sauce, basil and toasted almonds.

Move onto a main of Jimmy Butler’s BBQ-glazed pork belly served with summer slaw and fries or a pea and shallot ravioli with baby spinach and a rich butter sauce.

There are Almanack classics that remain on the menu because they’re simply so popular; free-range chicken schnitzel and garlic and parsley butter, peppery rocket, Parmesan and fries; miso-glazed cod with black rice, choi sum and lime, and for hearty appetites the 14-hour slow-cooked beef and ale pie, buttered mash, greens and gravy that is soft and melting and deliciously comforting.

I opted for the Ham Hock Salad to start – a shrewd move on my part as I’d already spotted a deliciously sweet dessert with my name on it so didn’t want to overstuff! It was refreshing and generously portioned and just the right opener to my meal.

Burratina

My dinner guests were both tempted by the impressive Specials Board and opted for Burratina with heirloom tomato bruschetta, chilli and basil oil and Wild Mushroom Benedict with poached egg and truffle hollandaise.

Hubby stuck with the Specials for his choice of Pea & Ham Hock Risotto, Salsa Verde & Watercress but which unfortunately left him a little underwhelmed. The same can certainly not be said of my 28-Day Dry-Aged Rump Cap Steak which was perfectly cooked to my specifications (always a good test of a restaurant’s kitchen credentials) and the aforementioned Braised Beef and Ale Pie, which received a huge thumbs up from my son.

Summer pudding

Three desserts were all polished off enthusiastically – and my much-anticipated Salted Caramel & Chocolate Tart did certainly not disappoint. The Summer Pudding with blueberry compote and vanilla ice cream was also a winner for the season.

Prices were on a par with restaurants of this standard in the region, with Starters ranging from £7.50-£10, Mains from £15.25-£33 (a £50 lobster dish and wine pairing was also on the Specials Menu during our visit!) and Desserts from £7.25-£9.25. A Mini Pud (Chocolate Brownie or Smidgen of Cheese) and Tea or Coffee option is also available for £6.95.

The Almanack, Kenilworth

You can also start your day with a great Almanack breakfast (which sound delicious) and Sunday roasts are a popular choice with the locals. Keep an eye out too for their weekday deals that are going down a storm including a second bottle of Prosecco, Crémant or Champagne Piper-Heidsieck on the house when one is ordered between 3pm and 7pm!

It’s easy to see why The Almanack is popular with locals. It’s a modern, vibrant and welcoming space that is very easy to feel comfortable in and with an impressive menu to boot. But, with so many excellent gastropubs vying for our business in south Warwickshire, they all have to work hard to draw in good number of people from slightly further afield. Our experience suggests it is heading in the right direction.

“Molly Ollys was an obvious choice for us as the support they provide is invaluable to so many young people and their families. On behalf of this year’s President James Holdsworth, we look forward to seeing the entries and would ask you share the link far and wide to help us help Molly Ollys and thank you and our sponsors for your valuable support in making this event a success.”

Molly Ollys was established in 2011 by Rachel and Tim Ollerenshaw following the death of their eight-year-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

These form part of an Olly The Brave pack that has now been handed out to more than 70 hospitals or health centres, along with a set of books from the charity’s exclusive Olly The Brave series.

Rachel Ollerenshaw said: “This will be the first virtual dog show fundraiser for Molly Ollys. We love all the varied ideas that people think of to support us. Thank you to the Rotary for organising and to everyone taking part. Your help really does make a difference.”

Doors open on new escape room

Doors open on new escape room

Puzzle fans are set to come knocking when the door to a brand new escape room swings open – and then promptly locks again(!) – in Warwick from this weekend.

Nottah Temple promises to take aspiring adventurers on a jungle expedition like no other when it becomes the third Tulley’s Escape Room to launch at Hatton Country World.

But beware the curse that lies within!

Hatton Country World, Tulleys Escape Room

Teams of between two and eight people are invited to crack the codes and unlock all the secrets as they puzzle their way through a series of gameplay challenges in the latest fun adventure.

In 1824 your long-lost relative, Lord Archington Harrow, the world-renowned explorer and his wife Lady Bessie first discovered an ancient temple. Hidden deep in the jungle, the intrepid explorers found a secret entrance which led them directly into the tomb.

Now inside this dark and mysterious chamber they discovered the place was full of gold and precious jewels. Lord and Lady Harrow, like all explorers, began to loot and stash the treasure. But then the temple walls began to rumble, and the ground began to shake.

Little did they know they had released the curse of Queen Conteptua, a curse that will destroy anyone in the blood line of Lord Archington Harrow. Now many years later, it is your quest to revisit the temple, return the stolen treasure back to Queen Conteptua and lift the curse!

Hatton Country World, Tulleys Escape Room

Between two and eight people have up to 60 minutes to complete the task before the temple collapses and the treasure is lost forever!

Tulleys Escape rooms, established in Crawley, partnered with Hatton in 2019 to launch the two original games, Mutiny – a swashbuckling adventure to overthrow a bloodthirsty buccaneer – and The Oufitters – where you’re part of a special police task force to crack gangs in Prohibition Chicago.

Hatton Country World owner, Johnnie Arkwright, said: “We are delighted to be opening a brand new room, which is only available at Tulleys Escape Hatton. The new experience has surpassed anything we could have imagined, a truly immersive treasure hunting experience; you have to see it to believe it. We look forward to explorers taking on the new challenge and trying to escape! Good luck.”

Nottah Temple is geared towards adults and teenagers and can be booked from August 2nd and bookings can be made HERE.

Beauty therapist to the rich and famous vies for second award just months into launching her first UK salon

Beauty therapist to the rich and famous vies for second award just months into launching her first UK salon

Italian entrepreneur Paola Spiga visited the UK 10 years ago to learn English – and did not return. Now she is vying for her second award within months of opening a new business, in Hockley Heath.

Once a beautician to the rich and famous, the 38-year-old has made a new life in Kenilworth, where she’s not only conquered her second language, but has already made her mark on her industry. And now she’s been named as a finalist in The Solihull Awards’ Outstanding Start-Up, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship category for her business Glam and Glow Beauty Lab in Hockley Heath.

It follows on the heels of her winning a national award – Start-Up of the Year in the Ladies First Professional Networking Awards, at The Dallas Burston Polo Club in Southam, last month.

She’ll have to wait to September to find out if she’s once again in the spotlight, when winners of the awards, organised by The Solihull Chamber of Commerce, will be announced at a special ceremony at Hilton Birmingham Metropole on September 13th.

It’s a proud chapter for Paola who has spent years perfecting her skills, working with industry experts at salons in Florence and then Warwickshire.

She said: “I decided it wasn’t for me and, at that point, didn’t have a clue what I was going to do. I enrolled myself on loads of courses and eventually managed to land an apprentice position at a local salon where I lived in Sardinia, and worked there doing make-up and nails for free for seven months. This was the first time I’d seen a beautician at work and it was mind blowing for me. This is where my passion started.”

A while after then landing her first paid apprenticeship, an exciting opportunity lured Paola to a beautician’s job at St Regis five-star hotel in Florence – while also continuing her  studies part-time to further her skills.

“I was there for three years and my life was amazing. I absolutely loved the hotel and the spa was stunning. And when a client there says to you ‘this is the best massage I’ve ever had’ and you know, they’ve been all around the world, you feel fantastic,” she recalls.

“I gave massages to the rich and famous and royalty from all corners of the globe. Most of my clients were extremely rich people. One of them even asked my colleague and I to join them on their yacht for six months as private masseurs. But I didn’t want to do that. It was a completely different world.

She added: “Looking back, it was the most important time of my career. That incredibly high standard of service has stayed with me ever since. Everywhere I go now I notice a million different little things that for me are so important. I always think, if a prince walked in my door now, would I be able to aspire to those sort of standards with what I offer? Ultimately I want all my clients to feel like a prince or a princess while they’re here, to feel like they’ve never felt in their lives.”

In 2014 Paola relocated to Kenilworth, staying with her older sister who had moved there six years prior. For the next few months she enrolled at Warwickshire College and worked in kitchens and cafes to earn while she learned, but while never losing sight of her long term vision.

After nine years perfecting her skills in three local salons – including Clarins in the former House of Fraser department store in Leamington and Windmill Hotel in Coventry – Paola finally realised her entrepreneurial dream – and, in October last year, opened the doors to Glam and Glow Beauty Lab on Stratford Road.

She said: “I always knew I wanted to open my own salon but I was never sure of what to do because I didn’t want to just go out there with no brand and have to rebuild everything. But I believed in my skills. For me it was more about finding the right location and the best products to give the perfect service.”

Hugely inspired by her mum’s own five-year cancer journey, Paola is determined to give back by offering complimentary treatments to those battling the disease.

Her greatest reward is the feedback and five star reviews from clients.

She said: “Once they had their treatment, they said to me ‘where have you been all of these years? You’re my angel, you’re my saviour.’ And for me, that best sums up the reason why I love my job.”

Let them eat cake for cancer!

That’s the rallying call of Leamington’s Bianca Rodrigues-Perry who is joining forces with an army of local independent businesses to organise a special charity event.

The well-known foodie champion and host of Bia’s Kitchen Show is organising Bia’s Great Macmillan Afternoon Tea Party, on September 1st, in conjunction with Leamington businesses, Whittle’s at Binswood and Warwickshire Gin Company. and Kirsty Leahy DJ.

And in the spirit of Bia’s show, the event is also being supported by a host of other local businesses, including some of her recent guests – Sophie Hyams of Culinary Bites With Sophie and Michael Scott of Scott’s Chocs, in Leamington. It forms part of Macmillan Coffee Morning’s annual September fundraising campaign – a cause close to its organiser’s heart. NV Her in Warwick has also supported.

“Cancer does not discriminate in choosing its victims; I have personally lost family members to cancer, and my children lost their grandmother and have seen others battle it and, thankfully, survive,” said Bianca.

She added: “How often do we take action to help others without expecting anything in return? This is a question I ponder daily. Supporting charities like Macmillan is the least I can do to offer hope to others. As Barack Obama once said: ‘The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.’”

Raffle prizes on the day include those donated by Dave Perry Photography (£100 voucher); Nicola Smyth Salon, Kenilworth (£50 voucher); Glam & Glow Beauty Lab in Hockley Heath (Aroma Back Massage); Arts Brazil Beauty, in Gaydon (Facial); Paprika Club Restaurant in Leamington (£60 voucher); The Leopard Spots, in Leamington (dinner and wine); Scratch Cook Social (five-course tasting menu at Café Desa); Magic Wingdom, Leamington (dinner for two); Homewrecker Pimento Cheese (hamper) and 1 Mill Street (café voucher).

Tickets are £35 which includes an afternoon tea supplied by Whittle’s and two complimentary drinks courtesy of Warwickshire Gin Company as well as live musical entertainment.

Since January Bia’s Kitchen Show has highlighted some of the best of the area’s foodie scene when it is streams twice-monthly to audiences on YouTube, Spotify, Instagram and Facebook. The show is an extension of her successful Bia’s Kitchen brand, featuring local independent chefs and restaurateurs cooking signature dishes as well as her own top tips and recipes.

It marks the latest chapter on a journey of reinvention for the now 43-year-old Brazilian-born mum-of-three, who left behind a high-flying marketing career in Rio de Janeiro – after relocating to Leamington to start a family with her new husband.

Bia’s Great Macmillan Afternoon Tea Party is a collaboration with David Blick of Warwickshire Gin Company and Whittle’s at Binswood. Distilled using a small batch method in Royal Leamington Spa and using a traditional copper pot, the inspiration behind the drinks collections comes from a desire to capture a moment in history, developing flavours to truly represent the county’s own unique story and bringing the hand-crafted flavours to life.

David said: “I’m proud to be able to support Bia’s Kitchen with her MacMillan charity afternoon tea. We jumped at the chance to support such a worthy cause. This disease touches most of our friends and families as with my father who, just a few months ago, sadly lost his three-year battle with liver cancer.”

Whittle’s at Binswood is a restaurant and bistro set within the beautiful Grade II Listed 19th century Victorian Binswood Hall in the heart of the Leamington conservation area. It also exhibits a stunning collection of art, including artists such as Patrick Nasmyth, Willem Roelofs and Francis Grant.

Anja Koserski, of Whittle’s, said: “We are thrilled to host the Macmillan Charity Afternoon Tea Party alongside the dynamic and inspiring Bia from Bia’s Kitchen Show. Bia’s positive energy and our shared passion for celebrating the joy of afternoon tea make this event truly special. Together, we look forward to creating an unforgettable afternoon that uplifts our community and contributes to this great charity.”

Kirsty Leahy

The event is also being supported by DJ Kirsty Leahy, from Leamington, who will be ensuring a great atmosphere throughout.

Kirsty’s professional services include radio presenter, video production presenter, live events host, DJ and motivational speaker.

She said: “I simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity to get involved with this event after having experienced cancer within our family too many times to mention. Last year my partner was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia which was thankfully caught really early and he is now cancer-free. But I have lost my mother-in-law and cousin to this horrible disease within the last two years.”

Tickets are available to book HERE.
